SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability) Information

Introduction

Special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) can affect a child or young person’s ability to learn and access the curriculum. They can affect their:

  • Behaviour or ability to socialise, for example they struggle to make friends
  • Reading and writing, for example because they have dyslexia
  • Ability to understand things
  • Concentration levels, for example because they have ADHD
  • Physical ability

SEND at Victory Park

Victory Park Academy is committed to providing an appropriate and high-quality education to all of the students within our school. We believe that all children, including those identified as having special educational needs have a shared entitlement to a broad and balanced academic and social curriculum, which is accessible to them.

We equally value all pupils in the school and strive to eliminate prejudice and discrimination developing an environment where all children can flourish and feel safe. We strategically plan for improvement ensuring a sense of community and belonging, which offers new opportunities to learners who may have experienced previous difficulties. We work to support all students overcome barriers to learn and find success in education. We recognise that learners should not be treated in the same way, but that we respond to learners in ways which take account of their varied life experiences and needs. All staff within our school receive high quality information and training to ensure that all student’s personalised needs are enhanced. We aim to quickly identify pupils who may require additional support and we provide targeted interventions and high-quality learning experiences to support and meet their needs.

At Victory Park all students are supported in smaller classes, reduced transitions, access to LSA’s to support learning, enrichment opportunities planned into the curriculum and sensory adapted learning opportunities.

Support, information and advice for parents

Victory Park strives to support students with neurodiverse needs, through adapting environmental and teaching strategies. We work with families to extend this support at home by creating a structured environment, clear communication, supporting their sensory needs with calming activities, and nurture their unique strengths and interests.

Overview of Class Groups

Harbour

Nurture base model, which support the teaching of Maths, English and personal development skills to access learning. All pupils currently are in the EHCNA and their main area of need is SEMH.

Donaldson

Primary classroom model, supported by QFT, smaller class sizes, differentiation both academically and emotionally, managed transitions and consistent staff.

LEAP

Nurture based model, with Primary and Secondary elements. Less transitions and curriculum focused on personal development and therapeutic subjects/interventions. Most are in different stages of the EHCNA and require wave 3 level of support.

STAG

12 week programme for pupils to develop coping strategies for their successful return to mainstream. Develop gaps in education and improve self-esteem and confidence.

KS3/ 4

Alternative provision for short term and long term pupils. Most KS3 pupils will either be moved back to mainstream or an alternative SEN provision. High level of pastoral support available for KS3 and KS4 pupils. All pupils fall under SEN (K) on the register. We teach the core academic subjects alongside vocational subjects to re-engage pupils back into learning.

We match the level of support to the student’s level of need. This matching is called our graduated

LEAP / STAG

LEAP (Learning Environment in an Alternative Provision) / STAG (Secondary Turn Around Group)

The STAG/LEAP is located on the first floor which in itself is a quieter area of the school, suitably distanced from the hustle of the main school, providing an ideal environment to support students.

We have a suite of rooms that are defined into purposeful areas for use, when supporting students within their time at school.

We aim to focus on three key areas:

  • Co-regulation, to equip students with the tools for self-regulation
  • Specific interventions to support personal development
  • Adapted curriculum

STAG Curriculum Intent

Our 12-week intervention programme is unique in many ways, and we are proud of the successes we build upon each year. Our primary focus is through nurture and support, while guiding students to ensure they have the best opportunity to cope and be successful in mainstream education. The ‘Bespoke’ STAG curriculum we offer to students prepares them for important transitions in their education and prepare them for their next steps towards adulthood.

The culture of Victory Park Academy is very much focused on improving the life chances of every one of our students. The STAG programme provides a platform where we epitomise this culture. We intend to be a beacon of good practice, whilst setting high standards for others to follow when working with challenging behaviour and the constant changes we face when working with young people who need our support in this way.

We are passionate about achieving our goals and succeeding with our students and continuously work hard to create an environment where all our students have a genuine opportunity to thrive and be successful. We build strong, healthy relationships that promote positive values, trust, respect, while we endeavour to raise their aspirations and self-worth. The nurture-based support and learning we provide offer the students a chance to break negative cycles and build resilience. These tools are essential for all our students to not only be successful in education, but also in life.

LEAP Curriculum Intent

LEAP is a positive and stabilising setting that supports students with varying SEN and bridges the gap between either another mainstream school or a specialist setting. Pupils are with us for varying amounts of time depending on the support they require. Our curriculum is bespoke, flexible, and personalised to enable pupils to progress onto the next stage of their education. We aim to provide a curriculum that enables each child to shine: to nurture their individual talents and raise aspirations.

The curriculum is designed to:

  • Re-engage all pupils as learners
  • Enhance the self–perception of pupils as learners
  • Inspire and motivate pupils, fostering a curiosity to learn
  • Enable all pupils to make progress from their individual starting points and to have success in learning underpinned by a focus on developing pupils’ social development, emotional well-being and mental health
  • Focus on developing pupil’s social, emotional and mental health
  • Have a strong curriculum focus on the facilitating subjects of English and Mathematics
  • Support all pupils to lead healthy and safe lifestyles
  • Support all pupils to develop the skills, behaviours and attitudes that will enable them to reintegrate and be successful in the next phase of their education.
